Memorials and
Memorial Applications
Creating a lasting tribute in a place of peace.
At St Laurence Churchyard, we understand the importance of choosing a fitting and respectful memorial for a loved one. We aim to make the process clear and supportive while also ensuring that all memorials meet the regulations set by the Diocese of Worcester and the standards of our churchyard.
Before You Apply
Before commissioning a memorial, please take time to read the Churchyard Memorials: A Guide for the Bereaved, which outlines what is permitted. These regulations are in place to ensure the churchyard remains a safe, dignified, and well-maintained space for all.
Key points include:
-
Memorials remain the property of the deceased’s family but must be approved by the church and kept in safe condition.
-
Headstones should be modest in design. Curved tops are preferred; heart- or book-shaped memorials, kerbing, railings, and photos are not permitted.
-
Inscriptions should be simple, respectful, and can include suitable quotations.
-
Any additional vases that will be a permanent feature require an application too.
-

(Alternatively, contact the church office for a printed copy.)
Please note: All applications must comply with the Diocesan guidelines. If your proposed memorial falls outside of these (e.g. design, materials, inscription), you will need to apply for a faculty—a more formal process involving the Diocesan Chancellor. This requires additional paperwork and a further fee.
In many cases, your chosen stonemason can complete the application form on your behalf. We recommend speaking with them before filling out or submitting any paperwork.
No memorial may be installed without written permission.
Working with a Stonemason
You're free to choose any registered stonemason, but we ask that they confirm they are aware of and will follow the current diocesan guidelines.
We recommend working with a professional stonemason who is familiar with our churchyard’s requirements. We particularly commend A. Pullen Memorials, who have worked closely with families and with us over many years and understand the diocesan guidelines thoroughly.
A selection of Stonemasons can be found in our Grapevine magazine HERE.
